Improving the eduroam experience with 802.11u

A recent update to the IEEE 802.11 standard has introduced a new set of features called ‘Interworking’ (also known as 802.11u). Interworking aims to improve the roaming experience for clients and is being used by the Wi-Fi Alliance in programs such as Hotspot 2.0 / Passpoint. These features are beginning to be implemented by Vendors in client devices and access points. Interworking technology provides opportunities for eduroam to improve the experience for users. Also, given the interest shown in Interworking technology by commercial hotspot operators, it is important the impact of these technologies is evaluated to ensure compatibility issues don’t arise between new devices and existing eduroam service providers.
