Monitoring, analyzing and cleaning DNS configuration errors across European NRENs

Domain Name System (DNS) is the basic and the most critical network service. Even though DNS is a well know subject to many network engineers, several recent researches have reported a significant number of configuration errors throughout the Internet. In this paper we present the results of our activities in monitoring and analyzing DNS configuration errors, which confirm that DNS misconfiguration occurs even in advanced networks such as European NRENs. Our results should raise awareness about this issue and initiate a clean-up process across European NRENs to achieve reliable network which is fully ready for emerging application and services.
