Identity federations are becoming a widely used solution for a serious problem of authentication and authorization mechanisms easy usable by researchers. Setting up an identity federation is not an easy task, which makes it complicated to deploy them in the developing countries.
Nowadays, research communities located in various parts of the World have different support by researchers' home organizations in terms of identity management. In some countries there are well established identity federations, in others there are identity federations with very few identity providers connected and elsewhere there is no federation at all. In this BoF we will present success stories of setting up identity federation in regions like Latin America and Asia, problems specific for each region will be also discussed. The presentations will be followed by a targeted discussion dealing with open questions related to the power of individual researchers or small and emerging research communities to influence the setup of federated identities, and to the options they have if there is not yet national (academic) identity federation available. The BoF targets all interested in the federated Identities and their use in the widest global context, as well as those interested in the actual deployment of the federated Identity systems to support small and emerging scientific communities in the access to grid and data infrastructures.
The BoF is organized by the CHAIN-REDS project (http://www.chain-project.eu) that aims to support the adoption of standard and emerging AA architectures and methods across the continents.
